Check Out Your Body

The New York Times has a great interactive page on learning about your body and the latest on health and medicine. There are nice rollovers where you can click on different illustrations of body parts, done by E. J. Stanley in 1901. Apparently he’s done illustration for fold-out books back in the day, but I can’t seem to find other illustrations online. Aw shoot.

Owl kills sloth. Damn nature, you scary!

I love sloths, so I was a bit sad reading this. Not really a surprise though, given how vulnerable they are, especially when they’re on the ground to do their weekly business.

Kate MacDowell

The beautiful porcelain sculpture of Kate MacDowell is just breathtaking. She combines anatomy and nature motifs to illustrate environmental issues, and her aesthetic is delicate, ethereal, and lovely. Oh I wish I could own one of her pieces. She will be featured in the upcoming Hi-Fructose issue Volume 15, along with other great artists like James Jean, Dalek, Mark Ryden, and Colin Christian.

Skulls in the City

Went walking through downtown last Friday and enjoyed the sights and sounds. I liked observing the crowds and architecture, very inspiring – got to check out Santee Alley and the flower shops for the first time.

I wandered through this store called (SUB)URBAN that sold these awesome skulls. They are made in-house and the mandible separates from the cranium. They are wicked and come in black and white (as well as limited colored runs, like turquoise and hot pink), although at $120 a piece, I’ll just have to admire them from afar.

Acoustapus

Who knew you can make an octopus sculpture out of a found guitar and other random objects? Apparently he did: Nemo Gould. The glowing is just a bonus.

Naughty Alphabet

I know it might be NSFW but I have to admit it’s pretty clever. And it has anatomy in it, so it’s all good…yeah.
